Sermon 2 Mark 1:4-11 4 Things the Holy Spirit in the baptism of Jesus

Date:8/25/24

Series: Gospel of Mark (2024)

Passage: Mark 1:3-11

Speaker: jeff blaine

Today we get to see Jesus immersed under water before Jesus went to the cross, before Jesus went to the grave, before Jesus was resurrected, and before Jesus ascended into heaven.
So the baptism we see of Jesus today is very different from the baptism that you and I receive as New Testament believers.
The baptism or immersion underwater that the New Testament believer gets today is based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ; The apostle peter tells us this:
baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ 1 Peter 2:21
Our immersion today in New Testament times is based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The immersion that Jesus went through is not based on the resurrection obviously because Jesus has not died, gone to the grave and in turn been resurrected.
But something happened in that moment when Jesus was baptized underwater; we see the Holy Spirit in this moment and need to consider what the work of the Spirit is when someone is immersed.
